Overview
Providers of different automation systems solve the problem of communication between user and automation through dedicated manufacturer-specific protocols. Each device requires it own software installations on the computers/end devices of the operator. If an end device is to be used to access different devices, this usually leads to a costly PC installation. This results in complex systems, high investment and maintenance costs as well as little flexibility when it comes to changes/expansions. Thanks to the standardised OPC interface, there is no longer the need for knowledge of manufacturer-specific protocols. This significantly reduces the outlay for development, commissioning and maintenance.
