TOPS Trend Open Protocol Servers learns the structure of the third party network (e.g. BACnet) and the devices on it. These devices and their values are then mapped to virtual Trend devices (TOPS devices) inside TOPS. The TOPS devices are then grouped into Trend Lans, and made available to TOPS compatible devices (e.g. 963) using Trend addressing, making them appear to the TOPS compatible device as Trend devices. Values can then be displayed, and if appropriate adjusted from the TOPS compatible device in the normal way. Alarms from the third party network can be received by the TOPS compatible device. TOPS can be installed on the same PC as 963 or on a different PC provided the device can access the TOPS PC over IP. The licence to run TOPS also determines which third party networks TOPS is able to communicate with (e.g. BACnet) and potentially the number of points that can be accessed, depending on the driver option used
